If there ever was a time to make health and fitness a priority in your life it is now.
Funding for and the building of a walkway along the Cudgegong River is a great opportunity to overturn Mudgee’s overweight and obesity rate.
In April NSW Health statistics revealed 66 per cent of Mudgee’s residents were overweight or obese.
Astoundingly, the numbers also told us 25 per cent of children were in the same scenario.
Recent screening of Mudgee workplaces found 70 per cent of employees had high blood pressure, elevated blood sugars and cholesterol.
What better way for Mudgee residents to start getting serious about their health than walking along the beautiful surrounds of the Cudgegong River.
With such a great space to use, the opportunities are there to get the whole family involved.
Plans to offer families a paver with their handprints really does put the path’s ownership back in the hands of the community.
But the walkway does not limit itself to families and those who need exercise.
The addition of static fitness stations along the walkway will allow even the most advanced athletes to benefit.
Then there are the people who will take a book to read on the river or just need a place to relax during their lunchbreak.
Tourists visiting the town for the weekend or a shorter stay are also likely to embrace the walkway.
And with visions to further the path to 2MG or Glen Willow the possibilities are endless.
As a community we now have an opportunity to make a significant difference to our health. It’s time to step up.
