Convoy to send vote of no confidence in government

22 Jul, 2011 09:00 AM

Gulgong couple Pam and Bruce Davis will join a national “Convoy of No Confidence” arriving in Canberra on August 22.

The convoy is seen as direct action against the Federal government’s carbon tax and banning of live exports to Indonesia.

Leaving Katherine (Northern Territory) on August 17, the joining convoy will meet at Parliament House where guest speakers will deliver their “vote of no confidence” in the current government.

Mrs Davis said routes for the convoy were still being finalised and the couple will most likely join at the closest point to Gulgong.

“It’s exciting,” she said.

“We need to show Australia is a country worth fighting for.”

The Gulgong resident said she was concerned the way Australia was heading.

“Real people want to be heard,” she said.

“We don’t want to be told what is best for our country.”

She said policies such as the carbon tax needed to go to an election to let the country decide.

“MPs need to be held accountable for this groundswell from the grass-roots of the country,” she said.

Mrs Davis said she first heard about the convoy on Sunday through the Just Grounds Community – an online social network.

Just Grounds Community member and president of the National Road Freighters Association, Mick Pattel, is organising the convoy.

Currently the convoy’s main leaving point is Katherine but the Mudgee Guardian understands it will also leave from several places in northern Queensland, southern Victoria and Western Australia to meet in Canberra.

Mrs Davis said it did not have to be just trucks entering the convoy as she will most likely travel in the couple’s Landcruiser.

“People are making banners for their vehicles, businesses are making banners for when the convoy comes through their town and of course all the drivers will have Australian flags,” she said.

Mr Pattel told the Beef Central website that industry across regional Australia could no longer bear the burden of a Government beholden to minority green and independent interests.

Barry, I suggest that before you decide to express a half formed opinion in print it might be a good idea to go back to school and learn to spell correctly.

It will be great to see the public support behind these convoys. I cannot imagine anyone being too surprised to learn that the government has lost the support of a majority of people, on many issues including asylum seekers, live export, foreign policy, carbon [dioxide] tax, MRRT, NBN, and many other concerns. Our PM thinks it right to publicly debase those of us who have quite rightly stood up and spoken out against the carbon [dioxide] tax, and this only serves to divide us.

I say speak out, before we lose our democratic freedoms. Once lost, it will be difficult to regain them.

Just a convoy who thinks the world is flat and Tony Abbott is God.Probably the first big trip these uneducated people have ever done. It's a shame these Abbott believers never did any travelling overseas and saw what other countries are doing.

Hi Pam, thank you for your support in the convoy, round up as many disgruntled (with the Government) people that you can muster to join in the Convoy of no confidence, your closest connection will either be Mendooran or Dubbo, but the just grounds website will announce the final routes as soon as they are finalised. regards Terrie, Secretary National Road Freighters Association

G'day Pam,

Right behind you

What a great idea. How are most people finding out about this so they can support it too.

Everyone needs to know.

Ah Pam - there should be more like you! What is interesting is that a minority of people think this convoy is just about truckers, or just about right v's left wing politics - WRONG !

The convoy does not discriminate, unlike some commentators - this is for all Aussies, to have the right to choose to participate - or not - their choice, to place on banners what they think THEIR political party of preference is NOT doing for them! OMG - "bad organizers...bad bad organizers" - fancy giving all people the opportunity to do this...WAKE UP uniformed commentators! This is your convoy too!
