Cooyal received a Highly Commended placement in the Cultural Heritage Award at this year’s Tidy Towns awards weekend in Tamworth.
The Parish of St Andrew’s Anglican Church cemetery restoration project competed against all other towns in the smallest population category, A (up to 350 people).
The cemetery at St Andrew’s Anglican Church had spent years in disrepair until parishioners decided to rectify the matter.
A local stone mason was employed to repair the broken tombstones, and a band of volunteers cleared and fenced off the cemetery.
Petula Samios, director of the Heritage Branch of the Department of Planning, congratulated the parishioners of St Andrew’s on their success.
“Even though this is a small scale project it has created a sense of pride in the community. It’s a good example of community members being committed to creating practical, positive change in their town,” she said.
