 Final touch at Glen Willow

Final touch at Glen Willow

08 Feb, 2012 07:55 AM
Twelve months on from its original completion date the Glen Willow Sporting Complex is receiving final touches this week.

On Monday afternoon the main ground looked ready for play as goal posts were erected.

A team of two soon became a team of four as the goal posts needed minor tweaking in their set up.

Mid-Western Regional Council manager of operations, Brad Cam, said goal posts and internal perimeter fence were the last two works to be completed on the main ground. Construction of the internal perimeter fence began on Tuesday morning.

“We are likely to have the car-parking and disabled car-parking spaces [painted] and complete this week too,” he said.

Mr Cam said the Glen Willow Sporting Complex had come a long way in the space of 18 months.

“It was exactly 12 months ago we were supposed to have the complex ready but obviously the 2010 December floods halted the construction process,” he said.

Mudgee’s $14 million dollar complex will have an official opening to the public on February 24.

Mid-Western Regional Council is planning a program including sporting clinics and children’s activities, as well as the official opening ceremony.

Members of the public will also be able to tour all the grandstand facilities, including change rooms, coaches room, media box and sponsors’ rooms.

Tickets for the NRL City vs Country are expected to go on sale this month.

The first match on the main ground will be the Western and Northern Rugby League Academy trial games on February 25.

Mid-Western Regional Council events co-ordinator, Alayna Shackleton, said the February official opening would allow time to fine tune the complex before its first major event, the NRL City vs Country Origin match on April 22.

Tickets for the NRL City vs Country are expected to go on sale this month.

Glen Willow will also host the Trans-Tasman Touch Football competition from April 26-28.

Games in this three-day event have been scheduled on Thursday and Friday as well as Saturday afternoon so that members of the public will be able to attend after work. Entry will be free.

Trans-Tasman players will take part in the Anzac Day parade in Mudgee on April 25 and a public event is planned afterwards.
