Breast cancer patients in Mudgee will soon have access to a local breast care nurse with funding announced this week for a four-year part-time position in the region.
Previously, breast cancer sufferers have had to rely on a visiting nurse from Dubbo.
Area Manager of Cancer and Palliative Care Services, Ruth Jones said the $12 million funding had been allocated by the Commonwealth as part of a partnership between the Commonwealth and the McGrath Foundation.
“A breast care nurse is a specially trained registered nurse who can provide information, support and care to people diagnosed with breast cancer.
“This announcement is a real boost to cancer services in Mudgee.
“Mudgee had been rated high on the list to be allocated a specialist nurse and the Bosom Ball held last month helped to highlight this need.
“The position will be based at Community Health and the Greater Western Area Health Service (GWAHS) is aiming to have someone in place in the next few weeks,” she said.
Breast cancer patient, Sue Harding said the announcement was wonderful news.
“Soon after I was diagnosed and met the Dubbo based nurse, Margie Collins, I realised what a vital role she played in supporting patients with breast cancer.
“Two operations later and she remains a critical part of my health care team.
“Initially she was able to provide me with heaps of information about my disease which enabled me to make informed decisions.
“When you are first diagnosed with cancer, there is enough to worry about without having to research everything yourself.
“Margie is like my lifeline,” she said.
Sue added that Margie also put her in touch with practical ways to feel better about life.
“After my first operation, she brought me a breast cushion to help with the pain and since the removal of my right breast has brought me up to date in the very latest prosthetic bras.”
Sue said having a breast nurse on the ground in Mudgee was an urgently needed resource.
