Georgia shows her true colours

08 Nov, 2011 06:11 AM
Mudgee artist Georgia Mansur has been invited by Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolor to select a set of 16 paints that the company will market as the Georgia Mansur Palette.

The rare honour makes her one of only four artists in the world - two in the USA and two in Australia - to have their own namesake palettes produced by the company.

The invitation came from Daniel Smith’s Seattle-based marketer, who called Ms Mansur unexpectedly and proposed that she design a palette of a dozen colours.

The marketer said she had followed Ms Mansur on Facebook for two years, enjoyed the work she was producing, and thought she would fit well with the company.

Ms Mansur tested Daniel Smith’s range of 238 colours, eventually pinpointing 16 favourites.

She reported back, “I really need 16, I just can’t choose 12.”

The company acquiesced, and the Georgia Mansur palette of 16 colours was born.

The palette has been chosen for its flexibility in depicting different subjects and lights.

As well as the essential “workhorses” - warm and cool variations on the primary colours - Ms Mansur included a few exceptional paints ideal for specific situations, including a transparency with a stunning mother-of-pearl finish, and a greyish blue that she had found perfect for painting metal tanks on a recent commission.

While she doesn’t sell the product or make money from it, Ms Mansur has supported her palette by giving demonstrations and promoting the set on her website.

She also gives out cards produced by the company with dried blobs of pigment that turn to useable paint when mixed with water, allowing painters to test the colour selection before purchasing.

Ms Mansur said buying the paints as a pre-selected set was very user-friendly.

The collection simplifies the task of choosing paints from the multitude available, and Ms Mansur’s demonstrations allow people to see exactly what can be achieved with this combination of colours.

Ms Mansur’s palette now outsells those of the company’s American-based artists, even in the USA, and its page is the most visited on the website of Daniel Smith’s Australian retailer.

Daniel Smith has been so pleased with Ms Mansur’s promotional efforts and marketing ideas that the company has next proposed the creation of a Georgia Mansur brush.
