Interest builds for Regent in lead up to auction

26 Jun, 2009 12:07 PM
Up for auction on July 18, the Regent Theatre is attracting the interest of prospective buyers and the Property Shop’s Hugh Bateman believes interest is only going to get stronger.

There have been a number of inspections over the past week, he said.

“It has mainly been people from away from this area that have been looking and I am anticipating further inspections next week as we start advertising in the metropolitan papers,” Mr Bateman said.

Mr Bateman said the potential buyers weren’t giving up their plans for the building.

“They are holding their cards pretty close to their chest. Some have looked at it from a commercial view but (the building) lends itself to other uses,” Mr Bateman said.

Mr Bateman said it was sad to see the building sold when it could be purchased and used by council.

“The theatre is a Mudgee icon and it is a pity to see it (sold). It could be utilised for something else and then you lose an opportunity for the community.

“(Purchase of the theatre) is a cheaper alternative than building another facility they may require now or in the future,” Mr Bateman said.

What do you think should happen to the theatre?

I don't think people have realized that the only way Mudgee can be assured of having a cinema for the future is for Council to buy the Regent and to preserve it, not only for future generations but as a huge drawcard for tourists. The Regent has a huge potential not just for films of all sorts but for live performances by theatre groups and musicians. If it is sold off to Mr businessman there is nothing to stop it being gutted and converted into who knows what and all the people who didn't want Council to buy it or just said nothing will be complaining that we no longer have a cinema. Use your voice, don't be silent, tell council "WE WANT THEM TO BUY AND PRESERVE OUR REGENT".

Why should the rate payers buy a picture theatre when it has been proven to not attract customers in the past? If these zealots are so serious about preserving this building, even though it is protected by heritage laws, why dont they put thier own money up and buy it? Whay should the rate payers have to foot the bill for a fical black hole. Seriously there are really some idiots that live in Mudgee.

I saw a man come into the shop the other day bleating on about the regent and how we should buy it through Council and brandishing around a petition. If this is the sort of aggresive person the regent issue attracts then pull it down and build a Hungry Jacks. Its people like this that persuades tourist NOT to come to our town.

I own another Regent Theatre the same age as the Mudgee Regent.Unfortunately the population of Mudgee today is not big enough to support the desired revenue needed to operate and maintain this beautiful theatre. No single screen of this capacity can function viably in any country town today due to the very high costs of operation.
