Mudgee Mayor Percy Thompson’s long service to local government was recognised at the Local Government Association of NSW’s recent annual conference in Tamworth.
Cr Thompson received a gold embossed certificate and the title of Emeritus Mayor in recognition of his years as mayor, and a second certificate, a medal, a miniature and a lapel badge commemorating his 20 years of service to local government.
On the first afternoon, Cr Thompson also had the honour of leading the procession of mayors into the conference.
Cr Thompson received his certificates and medals and had his badge pinned to his chest before an audience of councillors, mayors and members of the public.
The audience included two of Cr Thompson’s great nieces who live in Tamworth, who he suspected were more excited about the award than he was.
Cr Thompson was first appointed to council 23 years ago, and has held a seat ever since, excluding the years during which the shire was placed under administration.
He held the position of mayor from 1996 to 1997, in 2004, and has now been mayor for successive terms since 2006.
While he said he had not joined the council to seek plaudits, Cr Thompson admitted it was nice to be recognised.
He took the opportunity to highlight the work of volunteers, such as the RFS, who give a lot
to the community and receive much less recognition
than councillors.
