Mudgee gets dressed up for Cup day

Corey Brown has won the Melbourne Cup aboard the Mark Kavanagh-trained Shocking ($10.00), making up for the heartache of his narrow defeat on Bauer 12 months ago.

Shocking won Australia’s famous race by a length from Irish galloper Crime Scene.

Another Irish invader Mourilyan ran third and Master O’Reilly was fourth.

Shocking and Crime Scene left the field for dead with 300m to go as they went out in front.

The two gallopers were neck-and-neck but Shocking slipped past Crime Scene in the final 100m.

Sydney-based Brown said winning the Cup was a dream come true after seconds aboard Bauer and Mr Prudent in 2002.

“I’ve finally won the Melbourne Cup.” Brown said on channel 7 after the race.

“My dream has come true, I can’t describe it, it’s unbelievable.

“Great job Mark Kavanagh and the horse, he travelled three deep with no cover, I know he had the light weight but he toughed it out so well.”

Brown finished second to Dunedoo born jockey Hugh Bowman in Sydney’s jockey 2008/2009 premiership.

Bowman finished near the tail of the field after Roman Emperor ran out of gas on the home straight.

The Bart Cummings-trained thoroughbred was sitting in second spot for most of the race, behind Warringah.

Central West residents and punters held their breath when the pack turned for the home straight as Bowman had Roman Emperor in the clear.

But the 3200m distance proved to be too much for the four-year-old as he was swallowed up.

Favourite Alcopop finished sixth while 2008 Cup winner Viewed finished midfield and did not threaten the front runners at all.
