Former Mudgee musicians Mitch and Mike Gordon are about to take up a steady gig playing on Japan’s biggest lake.
The brothers will play on day cruises around Lake Biwa, five days a week for nine months.
The Gordons graduated from Mudgee High School in 2009 and were on the verge of completing their studies at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM) when they came across the opportunity to work in Japan.
They sent off an email, submitted audition tapes, and had a feeling their songs were being well-received.
Last week, they found out they had the gig, along with a third AIM student who will join them on piano.
The brothers don’t yet know what music they will be playing, and are waiting to see a set list compiled by their employers.
The brothers have never been overseas before but have long hoped to visit Japan and been “in love with the culture”.
They had planned one day to travel and play overseas, and now have now found a way to earn a guaranteed wage through their music, which they said was very exciting after two years as “poor uni students”.
The brothers played together regularly as teenagers in Mudgee, and have continued performing as a duo at university.
Having played together since they started learning, and lived together all their lives, they say they get along well and have the convenience of being able to rehearse at home at any time.
They will leave Australia on March 1, and have already started preparing by taking care of their Sydney lease and deferring their final recital at AIM.
When the brothers return to Australia at the end of 2012, they will complete their final recital and are both looking forward to further study.
Mitch is considering a Diploma of Education and moving into music therapy, and Mike is looking at a Diploma of Education and further travel.
