Mudgee region on high fire alert

18 Nov, 2009 09:28 AM
The Mid Western Region has been placed on a high fire danger warning with lightning strikes causing a number of small fires across the district.

The Rural Fire Service received a number calls of small fires scattered throughout Queens Pinch, Lue and Rylstone on Tuesday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the group said the crews were dispatched as soon as they received the calls and were able to contain the fires quickly.

Crews were checking the fires again early Tuesday morning to make sure they had not flared up again.

Another earlier lightning strike last Thursday evening saw Rural Fire Service volunteers fighting a fire 15km north of Mudgee, close to Gooree Park over the weekend.

The fire took off in the dry conditions with helicopters being called in on Sunday afternoon to help with the fight.

A Rural Fire Service spokesperson said the fire had not directly affected property.

“Around 40 to 50 hectares have been burnt out, but it is mostly in grass land and forest areas,” the spokesperson said.

Crews from the local district continued to extinguish the fire on Monday morning.

The fire comes as the area is put on high fire alert with temperatures predicted to reach 43 degrees across the region on Thursday and Friday.

They are only expected to reach 34 degrees today, with possible thunderstorms recorded for this evening and Friday afternoon.

As a result of the high temperatures western parts of the region have been placed on total fire bans, and anyone considering lighting a fire should contact their local Rural Fire Service office to see what bans have been put in place.
