The newly refurbished Regent Theatre will screen movies this July - prior to the landmark Mudgee building going under the auction hammer on Saturday, July 18.

Mojo Events and Promotions from Orange in conjunction with Hugh Bateman of the Property Shop announced the news on Monday.

Mojo is the company that brought Flix in the Stix to Frog Rock Wines over the summer.

Mr Bateman is auctioning the property and it now appears that owner Peter Freedman’s dream of finding someone to run the Church Street art deco beauty has fallen through.

Mojo’s Simon Rollin and Mr Bateman said with ownership possibly changing hands “the green light for a short term Regent revival has been given by the theatre’s present owner.”

“Friday, July 3 will be opening night with movies to screen on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for three consecutive weeks culminating in a combined movie/auction night on Saturday July 18,” Mr Rollin and Mr Bateman said.

“While movies are yet to be confirmed, Mudgee locals can be assured that they will be able to catch some of the latest titles during the Regent Theatre revival. All movies along with screening times will be released in the next few weeks,” they said.

“Every time I drive by the Regent, my mind wanders at the prospect of bringing the Regent to life again and now we have been given that opportunity,” Mojo’s director, Simon Rollin, said.

“We are very excited to be involved and hope that we can do the theatre’s history proud in the way we run it during this brief stint at the helm.”

“We would like to think we will deliver a great experience to patrons, not only in terms of some great movies, but also a taste of nostalgia. From the moment someone steps into the Regent during the revival, we want them to get caught up in a unique movie experience” Mr Rollin said.

With the auction only weeks away, Mr Bateman, is encouraging anyone with even a slight interest to get in touch so that an inspection can be arranged.

“The Regent is, without doubt, one of the most impressive art deco buildings we have ever listed and represents a significant opportunity to invest into one of Mudgee’s most loved landmarks” Mr Bateman said.

My wife and I are well into our 70,s and no longer drive. We walk to town regularly to shop and are within walking distance of the Movie House. We would love to have a visit to the movies at,say 10.30 in the morning, even if only once per week. One session, if only one day per week, would be fine.

what about some movies for a more mature audience? Not all people over fifty want to watch the sorts of movies chosen for the first weekend even though they may dearly love to support the regent!

would love to see the old piture theater keep going. We need to watch movies here, not have to drive to another town to do it! Just need to fix the sound & the air con! I would have been there regularly if I could hear, & be comfortable.

Should ratepayers have to fork out for a failed business? Of course not and anyone who says we do has no idea of economic responcibility.
