A Central Coast man visiting Gulgong last Thursday may have been an ordinary tourist to some but to others he has given a whole new meaning to the phrase “road trip”.
Terrigal resident Peter Harris has embarked on the trip of a lifetime, visiting the 93 towns across Australia which all get a mention in the 1962 Lucky Starr classic I’ve Been Everywhere.
The 42-year-old pulled into Gulgong after traveling 345 kilometres from home on his latest leg of an approximate 30,000 kilometre journey. From there he spent the weekend traveling west to Narromine, Tullamore, and Molong, before heading back along the Blue Mountains to Lithgow, Megalong and Kurrajong.
After spending a night in Gulgong, Mr Harris said there were two highlights during his short stay.
“The [proud] ten dollar note association with Henry Lawson is something I never knew about,” he said.
The now learned traveller also wanted to get a slice of Melba fame with Dame Nellie Melba reported to have performed at the Prince of Wales Opera House.
“I thought I might be able to get some Peach Melba but unfortunately no one was selling it in town,” he said.
Mr Harris said he began the adventure on a whim from his home in November last year.
“I’ve just visited my 40th town after covering about 10,000 kilometres,” he said.
His target will be to reach all 93 towns by November but with work commitments it will be a battle.
“I try to get away for a week or two every month,” he said.
“I just love little rural towns. They all have their own story.”
Mr Harris added he would love to learn the lyrics of the song by the end of the trip and be the first person to visit all 93 places as well as know the song entirely.
Mr Harris is also raising money on his journey throughout Australia in particular for the Fred Hollows Foundation, planning to raise $2000.
