Owners of pets should take care this season with snakes becoming more active over the past month due to warmer weather.
Cudgegong Wildlife Carers Inc Rachel Knowles says owners should be aware that snakes are out there and will be active in the coming months.
“People really have to be aware that even though you cannot see them doesn’t mean that they are not there.
“In the summer months it’s very important to keep your garden clean and tidy, grass cut and bushes trimmed to make sure snakes don’t find a home in your backyard,” Mrs Knowles said.
Veterinarian Heather Glover said there has been an increase in the number of cases of snake bites this year but that it is important for owners of animals to be aware of the dangers and know what to do in case of an emergency.
“Treatment is similar to that of a human. You apply a snake bandage to the area if possible to try and stop the spread of the venom, try and keep them calm and get to the vet as quickly as possible.
“The outcome depends on a number of factors, namely the size of the animal, the size of the snake and how venomous it is, how quickly you can get to treatment and how treatable the animal is,” she said.
Veterinarian Glover said the mortality rate for dogs is generally 50:50 with but often cats have a higher mortality rate as they go away from their home to die.
“Every case is individual and dependent on a number of factors but parents and owners of pets need to be aware that snakes are out there, they are active, and brown snakes in particular are not afraid to defend their territory or themselves.”
