With extraordinary summer heat hitting Mudgee over the last few days, the region is set for the hottest November in 15 years.
Already this month’s average is 30.7 degrees which is almost five degrees higher than the long-term average of 25.8.
The community has been reminded by numerous organisations to stay cool and take precautions wherever possible when exposed to hot conditions.
Of particular importance is pool safety and the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia is urging people to check their backyard pool for any possible dangers.
Over the past 12 months toddler drowning deaths have risen dramatically in Australia and 59 per cent of them occurred in a backyard swimming pool.
Royal Life Saving CEO Rob Bradley said thousands of pools are potential death traps because of loose, unsafe fencing or fence gates that are not working properly.
“Swimming pool fences should be no more than 100 millimetres from the ground and should be at least 1.2m high with no vertical gaps more than 100 millimetres apart,” he said.
Other warnings from the heat wave have been released including total fire bans across the central western plains and across the state.
The Greater Western Health Service is also advising people on tips to stay cool and hydrated during the hot weather.
