Mudgee Public School has excelled expectation at the NSW PSSA athletics carnival in Homebush with unbelievable results on the running track and in the field.
Most notably was the school’s junior boys 4x100 metres relay team, which finished seventh in the final.
The team of Oliver Johns, Ryan O’Connor, Tom Burke and Harry Parsons qualified for the final after successfully advancing through the heat and semi-final stages.
It was a truly outstanding effort by the four students as they competed against 50 other schools from Sydney and other regional areas.
“We are over the moon at the school’s performance,” Assistant Principal Todd Morley said.
“I don’t think I have heard better results; well not since I’ve been here.
“Those boys ran really well... if we can keep them together then boy, they’ll be a force in the future.”
The four boys recorded personal best times everytime they ran on the track.
“They were up against some of the big schools who have all the facilities to do their training, we’re just a small school and to do what we have done is just incredible,” Mr Morley said.
The two girls relay teams - junior and seniors - also produced personal best times in their runs.
Junior girls - Breanna Taylor-Lucas Jade Cooksley, Macy Morley and Ebony Hudson - finished 20th overall, while the seniors - Mimi Tym, Chelsea Baillieu, Verity Morley and Shae Ramien - finished 19th.
The seniors missed out on the opportunity of racing in the semi-finals by one-tenth-of-a-second.
“They had a bit of a mixed up during their heats, they fumbled their baton, which made them lose a bit of time... but that’s the way relay’s are run,” Mr Morley said.
There were 15 Mudgee Public students who represented the Western area at the carnival.
Not only did Mudgee Public scorch the track but they also produced excellent results in the field events.
Edward Baillieu and Juan Box finished 15th in the discus and shot put respectively, Chelsea Ballieu and Harry Parsons were 13th and 28th in their respective long jumps, while Olly Johns and Joel Bodiam were fifth in 200m and 800m heats respectively.
Mr Morley says the school’s performance at last week’s carnival is only a sign of things to come.
“We have a good crop of athletes coming through the ranks so I’m sure there will be plenty more success for us [in the future],” he said.
