 167 not out

167 not out

01 Feb, 2010 11:29 AM
Jared Clulow scored one of the biggest individual scores in recent seasons when he belted an unbeaten 167 against Lawson Park Hotel at Cahill Park on Saturday.

It was the Oriental Hotel skipper’s best score in the O’Brien Bartlett Mudgee first grade competition for quite some time.

He used the small Cahill Park to his advantage as he hit 23 fours and two sixes in his brilliant knock.

Clulow said he was steady early on in his innings but became comfortable as he went on.

“The wicket was a bit slow, so I had a lot of time [to play my shots],” Clulow said.

Lawson Park had an opportunity to get Clulow out when he was on 99 but Michael Ford dropped him.

The poor Lawson Park bowlers copped stick and the fielders were chasing the red leather all over the field.

Oriental showed no mercy as they scored the biggest total of the season - 6/344.

Luke Rothe was another Ori batsman who took exception to Lawson.

The big hitter smashed 81, which included six fours and five sixes. He in fact hit four sixes of one Toby Joyce over.

Clulow joined Rothe at the crease when Ori lost Mark Hundy for 8.

For the next 16 overs Clulow and Rothe enjoyed a season record 136-run second wicket partnership.

The onslaught continued when Rothe was out, Stuart Bromley joined his skipper and the pair put on another big partnership, 110 runs for the third wicket.

There was not much to celebrate if you were a Lawson Park supporter but stand-in captain Darren Snyder praised the efforts of his bowlers.

“We bowled well,” he said. “But when you are up against someone in form like Jared was, it is difficult to get him out.”

The troubles continued for the Parkers with the bat as they lost Ford and Jon Chapman early on.

Nigel McKenzie and Snyder played cautiously to get their innings back on track but once McKenzie was out for 27, Lawson crumbled.

The wooden spooners were dismissed for 70, 274 runs short of their target.

Paragon v Woolpack at Victoria Park

Stoddart and King do it for Paragon again

By BEN HARRIS

Dropping Daniel Stoddart on zero and Dylan King early in his innings proved costly for Woolpack Hotel in their O'Brien Bartlett Mudgee first grade match against Paragon Hotel at Victoria Park on Saturday.

The two leading Paragon batsmen went on to post half-centuries and guide Paragon to their ninth win of the season.

Chasing a tough 191-run total for victory, the Supa 8s champions successfully chased down the target with more than 10 overs to spare and four wickets in hand.

Dylan King was the chief aggressor as he belted 74 from not that many balls, which included 10 fours and two sixes.

Stoddart got back involved with the runs with 72 not out of his own.

They were the only two batsmen to get runs as the others struggled to score.

Woolpack captain Steven Knight was annoyed at the way his team bowled after a superb effort with the bat.

"We batted really well, everyone contributed with the bat," Knight said.

"But we bowled very ordinary, too short in fact. We spoke about it before we went out to field ... also you can't give Dyl or Daniel any second chances."

Adam Honeysett and Mitchell Hearn both scored fifties for Woolpack but it was Paragon's Dane Williams who did the damage with the ball.

He collected 6-46 in only his third match back for Paragon.

Paragon captain Jeremy Doherty said the three D's - Dane, Daniel and Dylan - were the stars for Paragon.

"Dan, Dylan and Unit won the game for us," Doherty said.
