Gulgong have made an incredible debut in the SCG Country Plate by smashing Wellington by 152 runs on Sunday.
Stuart Bromley and Matt Seis single-handily destroyed Wellington with bat and ball.
Bromley belted 102 while Seis went on a rampage with the ball picking up figures of 7-38 from 10 overs.
Gulgong captain Mark Gorrie said Bromley and Seis played sensationally.
“Stu came to the wicket when we were in a bit of trouble, we were three for not many and he just consolidated the wicket and played an incredible innings.
“Matt did very well... there was no life in the pitch and to claim the first seven wickets was unbelievable,” Gorrie said.
Wellington Cricket’s publicity officer Ron Moore said Gulgong was a powerful team.
“Our players are showing improvement but Gulgong proved too good for us,” Moore said.
Gulgong won the toss and batted first but lost Gorrie (14), Jason Hollow (4) and Steve Mark (7) in quick succession as Wellington’s opening bowlers Will Redfern and Ben Crean took three wickets between them.
Bromley joined Dion Hollow in the middle and the two put on a vital 57-run partnership for the fourth wicket.
At 4-87, Gulgong’s inform batsman Darren Coubrough strolled to the crease and he and Bromley put Gulgong into a commanding position.
The pair were involved in a 105-run stand, with Bromley the chief runs-scorer.
Bromley lifted Gulgong’s run rate considerably by blasting the ball to and over the boundary.
He brought up his century with a single but was dismissed soon after when he was caught off the bowling of Dillon Price.
Price finished with four wickets for the match.
In reply Wellington started horribly losing their first two wickets in the first over.
Seis’ right-arm mediums proved too hot for Wellington to handle as one-by-one the batsmen were sent back to the pavilion.
Scott Preston threw the bat around a bit with 13 but the damage had been done by Seis earlier.
Mark and Doug McLennan took the remaining wickets between them.
Gorrie says his Gulgong team is improving each time they play together.
“We are becoming a very good side that has a lot of confidence.
“After the match the morale was so high, so excellent, the boys were talking about cricket and enjoying it.
“Stu laid the platform for us with the bat and Matt just took the early wickets and we went from there,” Gorrie said.
Moore believes the inexperience of the team played a major role in Wellington’s loss.
“They are fairly young inexperienced players that lack a bit of experience at the moment,” Moore said.
“They will weld into a good unit a good year or two down the track.”
Gulgong will play Forbes in the next round on November 15 after they defeated Narromine by 112 runs.
Gorrie says his team are not intimidated by other teams.
“We want to go as far as we possibly can and we are very confident we can do well,” Gorrie said.
Gulgong cricket is looking for sponsors for their upcoming representative games.
