They were pushed to the limits but Prince of Wales (POW) capped off their undefeated season with victory in the Gulgong District cricket grand final yesterday.
Bowler Dean Illott was the knight in shining armour for the princes as he took four wickets to shatter Centennial Hotel’s premiership hopes.
Chasing 131 for victory, Centennial Hotel fell eight runs short of their mark.
Gulgong District vice-president Brian Gudgeon said it was a nerve-racking match.
“There may not have been a lot of runs scored but it was very entertaining,” Gudgeon said.
Illott’s 4-15 earned him the player of the grand final award and the toasts of his players.
Centennial had no idea how to play against Illott’s slow medium/off breakers.
The Tim Papworth-led side should have won the match after being 7 for 122, but Illott took two wickets in successive deliveries to turned the match into POW’s favour. Unfortunately, Illott missed out on a hat-trick.
The game ended when POW captain Matt Seis cleaned up his namesake, Hayden Seis for five.
It was back-to-back wins for POW, and another premiership for the side, who has been together for close to eight seasons.
Earlier, Matt Seis’ decision to bat first proved not to be a bad one as POW was 1 for 69 on a tough pitch.
But Centennial broke through with Dion Hollow and young Zac Adams picking up the vital wickets of Stephen Mark and Cameron Cox.
Gulgong cricket legend Dennis Seis was looking good earlier on and hoping to repeat his half-century performance from the major semi-final.
But he suffered an injury to his right calf muscle and had to retire briefly. He came back aided by a runner but in ironic circumstances Dennis was run out for 16.
There was not much on offer from the lower order as Centennial easily ripped through the POW; bowling them out for 130 from 47 overs.
But as we have seen in the past, POW bowlers can bowl teams out for under 100.
Centennial lost Will Jackson early, so the Hollow boys - Jason and Dion - were left to pick up the pieces.
They put on 25 before Seton Croake dismissed Jason for 14 and Dion, not long after.
Papworth came and went, and it was left to Mick Camilleri and Doug McLennan to steady the ship.
They got the score to 87 and Centennial was looking good, until the wheels started to fell off thanks to Illott.
POW could have wrapped it up earlier but they were making life hard for themselves when they dropped five catchers in the dying few overs.
But they got left off the hook, and took the win and the premiership title.
In the Birriwa Consolation Cup final between RSL and Commercial Hotel, Commercial won the match.
