Waratah all out for 49

04 Nov, 2009 11:08 AM
Woolpack Hotel have pulled off the biggest upset of the season after they defeated the competition leaders Waratah Hotel by 39 runs in their round four Mudgee Bearing Centre reserve grade match on Saturday.

In fact, Woolpack humiliated the defending premiers - bowling them out for a measly 49 runs.

It was a huge form reversal for Waratah; they scored 274 runs a week ago as captain Matt Tompsett hit an unbeaten 100.

Tompsett did not play on Saturday but Waratah had pretty much the same side when they scored their mammoth total.

It was not a game of high scores with Woolpack being dismissed for 88; the third time they have failed to reach 100.

It seemed, at one point, Woolpack were on their way for a 100-plus total with Craig McGrath and Matt Orr at the crease.

McGrath (35) and Orr (21) were the two top scorers for Woolpack - McGrath the aggressor, hitting a near run-a-ball before he was bowled by Dan Akers.

But Woolpack maintained their collapsing-form by losing their remaining seven wickets for 36 runs.

Josh Harrison and Brad Hickey were the main wicket-takers, picking up seven wickets between them. The pair ripped through Woolpack’s lower order with Woolpack losing four wickets in 12 balls.

Chasing 89 at just over two runs an over should have been an easy task for Waratah but they started horribly.

They lost Harrison, Mick Tompsett and Marty Harrison inside the first four overs as Woolpack had Waratah reeling at 3/5.

Aaron Hannay had two and he soon got his third when he had Ceejay Harrison caught for one. Waratah continued to loose wickets in clumps and were struggling at 7/23.

Andrew Tompsett stood up for his team and got the scoring moving.

He made 22 and was involved in a 25-run partnership with Warwick O’Brien for the eighth wicket.

But any hope of a late surge was lost when Tompsett was bowled by Rutkowski; a ball later Waratah were all out.

Hannay finished with 3-6 from his five overs and Gordon Wright (3-10) also claimed three wickets from five overs.
