Mudgee Wolves president Peter Mitchell said there was a possibility Mudgee could field a team in the Western Premier League (WPL) competition, but not for a while.
WPL president Jim Auld expressed his disappointment after the region's premier football competition attracted six teams for the 2012 competition.
Orange Waratahs, Dubbo FC, Westside Panthers, Orana Spurs, Lithgow Workies and new club Barnstoneworth based in Orange will play in this season's WPL competition.
Auld wanted at least seven teams to contest the competition.
He would like to see a team from Bathurst or the Lachlan football region - Parkes, Forbes, Young and Cowra - taking part in the WPL.
He even left the door open for Mudgee.
However, Mitchell said the Wolves weren't prepared to walk through that door for a number of years, if at all.
"There is always a chance," Mitchell said.
"But at this point in time we're not prepared [to step up]."
Although the Wolves field two senior men's teams in the Bathurst District Football competition, they would need three for the WPL - first grade, second grade and an under 18s.
"We would have about seven or eight blokes who would be up to it and that's no disrespect to the other blokes," he said.
"To field one team you would need a squad of 25 because you have to cover injuries, players being away and suspensions.
"Down the track it is a possibility but not now."
Auld believes while the first couple of years would be tough for any new club wanting to join the WPL, what any side needs to do is look at Lithgow Workies.
"They struggled, but now they've done extremely well," Auld said.
"They've won under 18s titles in 2010 and 2011, and the first and reserves have made the semis."
