League legend's breast cancer pain

Rugby league great Peter Sterling knows all too well the pain cancer causes families.

He lost his mother to breast cancer when he was nine and his sister had four bouts of the disease before she too succumbed to the illness.

"Unfortunately it has been a big part of my life," the Channel 9 league commentator said.

"It's something that has been a constant thing. It's close to my heart but not in a nice way."

Sterling has been raising awareness and funds to help battle the disease that kills 2800 Australian women every year.

And in February, the residents of Mudgee can play their part in the fight.

Sterlo, as he is known in rugby league circles, will be headlining the celebrity golf classic in Mudgee on Friday, February 24 to help raise funds for the Mudgee Breast Cancer unit, Pioneer House and Mudgee junior golf.

The four-time premiership-winning player will be joined in the classic by Mudgee's favourite son Ken Sutcliffe, former NSW captain Steve Mortimer, former Cronulla fullback David Peachey, Channel 9 sports reporter Tim Gilbert, and former professional golf player Lucas Parsons from Orange.

He hopes the people who participate in the day will enjoy themselves.

"I hope they have a good time," the former Parramatta, NSW and Australia half-back said.

"Yes the whole aim is to raise money but the most important part for me is for people to have a good time. For people to leave at the end of the dinner and say 'how good was that'."

Mudgee's inaugural celebrity golf classic tees off at 10.30am with a shotgun start.

Teams of six will take part in a six-person ambrose.

Following the golf, players will go to a three-course dinner at Blue Wren Winery where prizes will be given out and Sterling will be answering questions from the audience.

It will cost $1000 per team for the day's event but it includes golf, the three-course dinner for the team and a complimentary bottle of wine between two people.

Sterling said he would like to make this an annual event.

"I love my golf. I've been to Mudgee a few times; I have good friends who live in Gulgong.

"I know Peter [Mayson, Mudgee's golf professional] well and we want to help to raise the profile of the club as well as raising money for charities."
