Mudgee teams belted in pennants first round

Mudgee have been given a wake-up call in the Central Western District Golf Association pennants campaign with all four teams losing their opening match.

Each division was beaten by their respective opponents 4-1; Bathurst in division one, Orange Ex-Services in division two, and Forbes in divisions three and four.

It was a bad start for the Mudgee club as they sit at the bottom of table.

It was the first time Mudgee had entered a division one team since 2009 and they were up against the defending champions.

Mudgee's number one and captain Matt Consadine had a day to forget losing to Bathurst's top player Phil Campbell 6 and 5.

Luke Ellis downed John Osborn 2up, Scott Matheson beat Matt Hicks 3 and 1, and Bill Casey recorded a 2up win over David Pearce.

Number two Josh Campbell was the only Mudgee player to get a win, beating Greg Kelly 3 and 2.

Consadine said lady luck wasn't on his team's side.

"It was pretty tight in a couple of games. John and Luke went to the last hole as did David," Consadine said.

"We could have beaten them with a bit of luck.

"Josh Campbell played really well and Matt Hicks, for a first timer held his own."

The result gives Bathurst 1.4 points and the top spot after the first round.

In division two at Orange's Country Club, Mudgee's number four Andrew Dunstone was the only winner for his club, defeating his opponent 2 and 1.

Keith Baker lost 2 and 1, Mudgee captain David Scifleet went down 4 and 3, Mick Kelly was hammered 6 and 5, and Taz Stathopoulous was beaten 2 and 1.

In division three at sandy Manildra, young gun Zac Kelly had a dream start to his pennants career, recording a 2 and 1 win.

Unfortunately that was the only joy for the Mudgee club as Chris Peters went down 2 and 1, Brian Insull was 1down in a tight match, and Brian Smith and Peter McDonald were belted 8 and 7 and 7 and 6 respectively.

Division four had to find two more players for their match at Bathurst.

But in the end Forbes was way too strong.

Forbes' number one Clint Sanderson defeated Mick Munro 2up, Lee Grierson was too good for Mal Mallinson 7 and 6, Jarrod Andrews beat Glen Morgan 5 and 3, and Ralph Baker took out Mal Hawkins 6 and 5.

Mudgee division four captain Trevor Crosby held on to win on the 19th.
