With the pain and despair of last year’s grand final extra time loss their driving force, Furney’s Engineering were able to put their nemesis Flynn Conn to the sword with a commanding 4-nil whitewash in the men’s hockey grand final at Westend fields.
Furney’s had been the dominating team all season and Saturday’s grand final proved that fact.
Last year’s runners-up took early control of the match with a goal from Nick Seis.
Seis has been in sparkling form all season and rarely finished a game without a goal to his name, often scoring several.
The 1-nil score line at half time saw Flynn Conn still in the hunt but a missed chance to draw level early in the second half, when a sharp cross from Corey Pilley to an unmarked Adrian Johnson on the post was missed, proved costly.
From there, Furney’s continued to pile on the pressure and as has happened many other times this season the flood gates opened and the goals started to come.
An inform Furney’s are difficult to keep out and James Charter, as the Flynn Conn keeper, did a remarkable job to deny them on several occasions but the sheer persistence of Furney’s saw Nat Young score.
To stamp their authority on the season even further, Seis found the cage twice more to score a hat-trick and to make the final score 4-nil.
Flynn Conn tried hard with Jason Nicholls, Max Smiles-Schmidt and Dave Lumsden at the back.
But it was the midfield and defence of Furney’s that were just bullet-proof on the day with great play from Keith Fraser, Geoff Watt, Bob Nemith, Pete Andrews and the Kenny duo of Craig and Andrew.
The most valuable player from the men’s grand final was awarded to Troy Kenny.
