Bullet fires in Perth

23 Nov, 2009 10:44 AM
Rylstone born and Mudgee-based trainer Tracey Bartley could not hide his emotions after his star galloper Sniper’s Bullet ($16.60) claimed the $1 million Railway stakes at Ascot in Perth on Saturday.

It was the six-year-old’s seventh win and first since the Stradbroke Handicap in 2007.

Aided by a gem of ride from Nash Rawiller, Sniper’s Bullet made up for his second to Gilded Venom in last year’s 1600m feature.

Rawiller had the gelding smartly away from his wide gate to sit outside early leader Keytomoney.

He made his move coming to the home turn and dashed the Mudgee horse clear on straightening and he had too much in hand for the fast-finishing Tarzi and Colour Correct.

Bartley said the win was bittersweet.

“I’ve never given up on this horse. He was unlucky here last year and even last start in the Emirates he was held up until the late stages,” Bartley said to Western Australian newspaper the Sunday Times.

This has been a super week. He settled in well and his dash-up on Tuesday was, in my opinion, a track winning gallop,”

The win took Sniper’s career prize money past the $2 million mark.

“It’s just great to win again as he’s been a great horse for Roger and Nerida (Atkinson) as well as my family.”

It was not a bad weekend for Bartley who had runners in races at Goulburn and Wellington.

Sniper’s Bullet younger full-brother Slick Sniper finished third in the Goulburn Cup.

Seven-year-old gelding Parfumier ($5.50, T Clark) won the hotly contested field from Macknuckle ($4.00, J Bowman) and Slick Sniper ($6.00, M Travers) in third.

At Wellington, Bartley had a win and a second placing.

Bartley’s Come On Hun (Daniel Edmonds) won the McCarroll Family Handicap over 1400m and Master Gaze (Tiffany Jeffries) finished second, one length behind Shyspin in the Jackie Ireland Memorial Handicap 1100m.

Other local trainers that had success at Wellington were Brett Thompson’s Prinsipe who finished second in the 1700m Plasto and Company Handicap.

While Rylstone trainer Bob Howe’s galloper Hibah came third behind Come On Hun and Suitably Connected.
