Mudgee Bowling Club farewelled one of their most loved womens’ bowlers on Saturday as Jan Fitzsimmons said goodbye after 15 years playing bowls.
Jan has made the move to Wagga Wagga where she will enjoy the company of her family. After living in Mudgee for 43 years, Jan will be leaving some great friendships behind.
Over the years, Jan has been club Singles Champion three times, won the Club Paris Twice, Handicap Singles three times and Handicap Triples once. She has also been a popular member of the Pennant team.
When winning her singles championships for three consecutive years in 2002, 2003 and 2004, Jan was the first person in Mudgee Bowling Club history to achieve such a feat.
“I am very proud to have that achievment. I was certainly playing some good bowls at that time and haven’t been as lucky since,” she said modestly.
One of the interesting things Jan has seen in her time at the Club is the introduction of coloured bowls.
“I bought some new bowls a couple of years ago and wouldn’t you know it I chose black ones,” she laughed.
Jan has served the club on Match Committee and as Secretary, always a willing worker for the club. More recently she has been chairperson for the District Match Committee.
On behalf of Mudgee Womens’ Bowling Club Narelle Pye said she thanked Jan for her contributions to the club over the years and that the club would miss her but wish her all the best for the future.
The Mens’ Bowling Club also sent a message of thanks, saying Jan has been a hard worker and accomplished bowler for Womens’ Bowls - both for the Club and District.
They also added Mudgee’s loss will be Wagga’s gain.
