MARTIAL ARTS
Mother and daughter Julie-Anne and Becky Maher represented Mudgee Martial Arts at the recent National All Styles championships on the Gold Coast, with Becky coming home with a silver medal and trophy for finishing third in points sparring.
The pair qualified for the tournament after sensational performances at the state titles in October.
They were the only two competitors from the club to participate in the competition.
Becky picked up two prizes from her four events.
She competed in the kata, continuous sparring, points sparring and the state team sparring.
Becky picked up a silver medal in the state team sparring but it was her third placing in points sparring that she was more delighted about.
"It was a pretty hard competition," Becky said.
"I was a bit intimidated going into it.
"At the state [championships], it was a lot smaller competition. The nationals attracted everyone."
Becky won her first fight by four points, lost the second by one, and bounced back to win her third and final bout by four points.
"I was pretty surprised," she said.
Julie-Anne competed in kata, points sparring and continuous sparring.
Although she did not place in any of her competitions, she said the experience was worthwhile.
"I did all right. I thought I did well in kata," Julie-Anne said.
"I was fighting against brown and black belts, which are higher [belts] than what I am.
"But it was a fantastic experience. I have never done it before."
Already the duo are planning to qualify for next year's national championships.
