ROWING

By DON MAHONEY

Classy performances at the National Rowing Championships held from March 3 to March 9 could lead to National Selection for 19-year-old Mudgee student Ed White.

The National Rowing Championships were held at the Sydney International Rowing Centre, the venue for rowing events at the year 2000 Olympics, near Penrith.

At this year’s Championships White, a member of the Sydney University Boat Club, was selected for the New South Wales Under 21 men’s eights (NSW Youth Eight).

The NSW Youth Eight was placed third in the Men’s Open Lightweight eight.

White won the Under 23 Men’s NSW Lightweight Pairs and the Under 23 Men’s Lightweight Fours.

As a lightweight rower, the second year Agricultural Economics Sydney University student has to weigh in at less than 70 kilograms before competing.

Following the Championships earlier this month, White is confident that he will be asked to compete at the National Selection Trials that begin on April 11.

The National Selection Trials bring together the best Under 23 rowers in Australia with the prize selection in the crews for the Under 23 World Championships to be held in July this year at Brandenberg in Germany.

White’s main goal is to gain selection in the lightweight fours team for this prestigious event.
