Current premiers Portland Colts face up to premiership frontrunners Kandos Waratahs tomorrow (Saturday) at Simpkins Park in round 10 of the Centennial Coal Cup.
Portland are in a neck-and-neck contest for the last two semi-final spots with Lithgow Bears and Blackheath, and for this reason alone will be a potential danger to the high-flying Waratahs.
Unbeaten after nine rounds, the Kandos side are hoping to make it three wins against the Colts and consolidate a spot in this year’s playoffs.
The Waratahs have had two sizable wins against Portland, 24-6 in a pre-season knockout game, and 54-18 in round three at Kramer Park.
Success tomorrow will ensure a semi-final spot for the Waratahs and put them in line for a good shot at the minor premiership, currently leading second-placed Oberon by two premiership points and a 16-point for-and-against advantage over the Tigers.
The Waratahs have three games to play - the return match against Oberon, then Wallerawang and St Pats, both these lowly-placed teams beating more-favoured sides last weekend.
The Kandos team will be keen for a win against Portland to shore up their position at the top of the table in their return to Simpkins Park since its recent revamp.
The final composition of tomorrow’s team is in doubt with the team still ravaged by injuries.
Centre John Madden was not considered for selection after being concussed in last week’s game, and coach Glenn Sargent is monitoring the injury situation.
Andrew Aylott is definitely out of the game, Cody Cafe is under a cloud, and there is a question mark over Todd Munn after rolling an ankle at training.
Kyle Jenkins is a welcome return to the side after a number of weeks on the sideline.
