Mudgee Dragons have threatened to leave Group 10 if a plan to stage the grand final in a predetermined centralised location is approved.
The five-time premiers are angry at the motion - put forward by the Group itself - to hold all future grand finals at Bathurst’s Carrington Park or Orange’s Wade Park.
It would mean Mudgee, Lithgow and Cowra would never be able to hold the grand final.
If the motion goes ahead then the Dragons would reconsider their involvement with Group 10.
“Leaving the Group is something that Brett (Mudgee Dragons president Brett Thompson) has talked about,” Mudgee junior vice-president Roger Lang said.
Group 10 president Linore Zamparini said he would be disappointed if Mudgee did leave.
“It would damage Group 10... all the clubs need to band together and go into the same direction otherwise there will be no Group 10,” Zamparini said.
The Group’s proposal came about because of lower crowd figures and gate-takings in past grand finals at Jubilee Oval and at Lithgow.
A vote was to be carried out but it has now been postponed until December 2.
The Weekly understands both Bathurst clubs - St Pat’s and Panthers - were 100 per cent behind the idea, while Orange CYMS and Cowra showed some support for the motion.
“If the vote had been cast on Sunday, there is no doubt we would have been defeated,” Lang said.
Zamparini said the centralised location of a grand final worked well for Group 11 but was open to other suggestions.
“This is an issue that is just too important... we’ve sat down with the clubs and discussed it and told them to come back with some solutions in December.
“They can get in contact with me and we can put the proposed solutions on the table for more discussion,” Zamparini said.
A possible solution, which was brought up at the meeting, was clubs, who hosted the grand finals, would have a set amount of gate-takings that they must reach.
“It’s hard to say if that would work ... obviously Mudgee would be able to achieve that,” Lang said.
“But the fact is hosting the grand final is a prestige... we hosted the grand final this year and it was a great spectacle,” he said.
Lang said the Dragons would be lobbying for support from the other clubs and bodies who have a vote such as Centennial Coal Cup and Group 10 junior rugby league.
