The Wombats will be out to spoil the party for defending premiers, the Blayney Rams, in a replay of last year’s grand final tomorrow.
To be played at the same venue as the grand final, the Wombats know just how hard it will be to defeat the Rams at home.
“However, we are a better side than we were last year,” Wombats spokesperson Trent Robertson said.
“We have not spoken about last year’s grand final all that much.
“Instead we have concentrated on keeping our unbeaten record in 2009 in tact.”
The Wombats are on top of the table, on equal points with Wellington, but have a game in hand over that side.
They are the only unbeaten team so far this season and tomorrow have the incentive to put in a huge defensive effort as they strive to keep their perfect record in tact.
Blayney, who are in fourth place with two losses this season, are never easy to beat at home.
“This Wombats XV is a better side than the one that ran on in last year’s grand final,” Robertson said.
Robertson reports that the mood in the Wombats camp is good and that the team trained well during the week.
He said there is a real resolve within the club to do well this year.
“Sitting on top of the table makes us targets for teams, but we like that fact and it actually lifts the players,” he said.
The Wombats XV is virtually unchanged from last week’s side except for flanker Gary Brentnall, who is out with a shoulder injury.
Regardless of the result, tomorrow’s game will give the Wombats another indication of where they are at in the competition as this is the first time these two teams have meet since last year’s grand final.
Already this season the Wombats have played and beaten the balance of the teams making up the top five in the competition after last week’s round.
Those teams are Wellington, Coolah (third) and Molong (fifth).
Robertson said new rules change the way the Wombats play against Blayney and the Mudgee team will be trying to run Blayney’s big men off their feet early tomorrow.
Then he expects the Wombats backline will come into play and run in the points needed to win the game.
“We are determined to remain undefeated and if our defensive effort is spot on we believe that will be the cornerstone to victory.
