Port Mac attack in Mudgee

Port Macquarie triathletes dominated the eighth race of the TriNSW Junior Series held at Mudgee yesterday taking out the top spot in the men's and women's 16-19 years age group.

TriNSW development squad members Cameron Pensini and Madi Roberts were first across the finish line in their respective races as strong winds made the course difficult for all competitors.

Fresh from a week's triathlon camp in Orange, Pensini and Roberts put the training into action and dominated the event.

Pensini completed the 500-metre swim, 20km cycle and 5km run in a time of 55 minutes and 45 seconds while Roberts took one hour and six minutes.

Roberts said conditions were difficult.

"I thought the race was really good but the wind made it hard," Roberts said. "It was pretty difficult out there."

Roberts beat home Gina Ricardo by seven minutes and Mudgee's Kate Moore (1:14) to win the age group.

Ricardo caught Roberts at the start of the second lap but the pint-sized Port Macquarie triathlete showed some ticker to pedal back into the lead when competitors came into transition for the final time.

Roberts went on to blitz the field on the run.

She said she has ambitions of stepping up to the longer distances.

"I want to do a half-Ironman [at Port Macquarie] later this year when I am 18," she said.

"I also want to get on the pro tour some day."

Pensini had to claw his way back from fourth out of the water to take out the men's competition.

The 17-year-old picked off the lead triathletes one-by-one, and by the time the first lap of the cycle leg was completed, Pensini was in the lead.

He remained in front for the rest of the race, extending his lead throughout.

He finished more than three minutes ahead of Ben Summers and nearly five minutes in front of Kieren Syme.

Mudgee Red Devil Emmett Karstrom finished fifth in a time of 1:14.

"It was tough riding out there but it was good to have the wind behind you on the way back [into town]," Pensini said.

"The bike and run legs are my strongest legs.

"I want to go to university but I want to maintain with triathlon.

"I'll be back again next year."

Race director, Mudgee's Nick Kastelein, said there were no problems at all during the event.

"It went really, really well. It was excellent," Kastelein said.

"The fact that the NSW camp in Orange lifted the quality of the field a bit."

Kastelein said the 75 competitors who took part in the eighth race showed triathlon has a healthy future.

"Racing and developing our juniors will be a positive. They [the juniors] will get a lot out of this."

In the 14-15 years age group, Jake Schumacher (47.08) and Isabella Khoudair (58.00) were the first male and female respectively over the line.

Keiren Tall (35.20) and Mikayla Martin (36.00) were first in their division for the 12-13 years age group.

Christopher Hingham (boys 10-11), Ella Heeney (girls 10-11), Harry Schumacher (boys 7-9) and Mudgee's Hannah Jones (girls 7-9) were the winners of the non-competitive events.
