Big three on their marks for carnival

8/09/2008 12:00:01 AM

GROUP 1 stars Racing To Win, Forensics and Mentality are set to clash in Saturday's carnival-shaping Theo Marks Stakes at Rosehill.

Racing To Win's trainer, John O'Shea, said yesterday his charge was in "good order" heading into his second run back from a spell, a stage of a preparation at which he is unbeaten in his career.

But he stressed: "He is a day-to-day proposition. With these sorts of horses, things can go wrong that quickly. We still have seven days to get to the Theo Marks and then it all starts over again until we get to hopefully the George Main Stakes with him."

Racing To Win had 69 weeks on the sidelines through injury following a failure in the 2006 Cox Plate, one of just two unplaced efforts in a stellar 20-start career.

This year O'Shea is planning on taking the six-year-old to Hong Kong in December for the international group 1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin. The gelding resumed with a strong win in the Warwick Stakes on August 23.

Warwick Farm trainer Peter Snowden is sticking closer to home with Forensics, which is a dual group 1 winner of the Golden Slipper and Queen Of The Turf Stakes as well as a winner of the $1 million Golden Rose earlier this year.

"She trialled well enough at Warwick Farm a little over a week ago and I'm happy with her heading into the Theo Marks," Snowden said yesterday, adding that Kerrin McEvoy will be having his first ride on the mare.

Forensics is being aimed at the Myer Classic at Flemington on Victoria Derby day (November 1).

Jockey Corey Brown will be having his first race ride on the John Hawkes-trained Mentality in the Theo Marks after riding the gelding to a trial win at Rosehill last week.

A former winner of the Champagne Stakes and Randwick Guineas at group 1 level, Mentality needed the run badly when resuming with a last in the Premiere Stakes.

Racing To Win's jockey, Hugh Bowman, will also partner the O'Shea-trained Nediyms Dream in the Research Stakes at Rosehill while he will be aboard Hurrah for trainer Chris Waller in the Kingston Town Stakes.

O'Shea said he may start imported mare Music Review in the Kingston Town while Brown sticks with the Anthony Cummings-trained Red Lord in the staying event, with the gelding coming off two impressive wins.

Brown will also ride the Joseph Pride-trained Judged in the Research Stakes after it resumed with a second to Research rival Hairy, which will be ridden by Jeff Lloyd.
