The Australian spirit was well and truly alive on Australia Day when Petrie’s Mitre 10 held a barbecue to raise funds for the Coonabarabran bushfire appeal.
“It went really well. We were just overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the local community,” Karen Gatley from Petrie’s Mitre 10 said.
The barbecue, which started around 10am and finished at 2pm, raised $750 for the Warrumbungle Shire Mayor’s Bushfire Appeal.
“We had people who were just walking or driving past stop and donate money towards the cause,” Ms Gatley said.
“All in all it was a very successful day,” she said.
Mayor Des Kennedy and councillor Paul Cavalier gave up a few hours of the day to help raise funds and an the barbecue.
“It was really great to see Des and Paul come down to help lend their support,” Ms Gatley said.
Ms Gatley said that Petrie’s had staff helping out on the day, running the barbecue and selling raffle tickets and that everything from the meat to the prize for the raffle had been donated by Petrie’s so that as much money as possible reached those who needed it in Coonabarabran.
“People have also been donating bedding and clothes that we’re going to send up there next week,” Karen said.
Petrie’s Mitre 10 will be accepting bedding and clothing donations instore this week. Anything donated will be sorted out before being sent to Coonabarabran to be handed out to people in need.
