The members of the Baradine CWA are collecting and distributing the handmade quilts through their “Caring with Quilts” project.
In the short time since the heart warming mission was set in motion by a fellow member, the branch has received 23 beautiful quilts and more are on the way.
“We wanted to help the families and individuals who had been affected by the devastating fires,” Baradine branch president, Nea Worrell said.
“We are all very much aware of how few possessions many people are left with in the aftermath of this disaster.
“One of our members, herself a patchwork quilt maker, came up with the wonderful idea of ‘Caring with Quilts’.
“She ‘tested the waters’ by blogging her network of friends in the quilting community to get some feedback and was amazed with the results.
“Promises of donations poured in from around Australia as well as the US, Portugal and New Zealand.
“The project has gained incredible momentum.”
Mrs Worrell said that some of the craftspeople are making a quilt especially for the appeal, some were giving quilts they have made for themselves and others were making them because donating quilts to charity is what they do.
“Many of the quilts have a special message embroidered on them and the name of the quilt maker will be attached to each one,” Mrs Worrell said.
“The quilts will be distributed as they are received by the branch over the next few months.
“Although we have had this extraordinary response, we do need more quilts. Our aim is to distribute a quilt to everyone who suffered a loss during the catastrophic January event.
“We hope the gift of a quilt will help to alleviate the trauma of the fires and show that we all care.”
Quilts can be any size, single or double or even for a child’s cot. Anyone wishing to donate a quilt can phone Donna on 0428 256 236 or email chookyblue2@gmail.com.
