The Waratahs finished the regular season as it began – with a massive lopsided shut-out of their opponents.
Their season started with a 60-0 defeat of last year’s runners-up Lithgow Bears in May – and last weekend’s 78-point win was the third time Kandos have kept their opposition scoreless.
For the fourth time, fullback Ben Thompson scored five tries while centre Cody Cafe scored four.
But first points went to Tim Condon in the third minute.
Five minutes later Trent Anderson broke the defensive line, found Blake Lobley in support down the middle, then the ball was swung to the left to open a gap for Todd Munn to step through for a try.
Jackson McKay scored a converted try to make it 16-0.
Thompson then scored twice, three minutes apart, the first with an assist from Munn after a clear break down the left side, and Condon’s final pass to the fullback gave him his second to push the score along to 28-0.
Cafe touchdown for the first of his four tries minutes later and followed with his second before Thompson’s third try increased the score at half time to 44-0.
Thompson was immediately on the scoreboard in the second half with another four points, then Strickland scored and converted his own try for a 54-0 lead.
Thompson’s final try brought up 60 points, and in the 65th minute Cafe’s third came from the kick-off when Dane Martin took the ball 40 metres for Cafe to demolish the remaining defence to sprint 40 metres to the line.
Todd Munn’s second try took the score to 72-0, and the Waratahs’ 14th and final try by Cafe gave the home side their 78-0 win.
Best for the Waratahs were Anderson, Thompson and Cafe, and once again winger Bryan Jenkins’ retrieval of opposition kicks to the corners was faultless.
Kandos have, over the 14 rounds, amassed 775 points, and would have added many more to the total if not for two forfeits by lowly-placed teams.
They will play CSU Yellow on Saturday at Waratahs Park with the winner to host the Centennial Coal Cup grand final on September 7.
