Kandos-Rylstone Amateur Boxing Club has a second representative heading to the International Boxing Association’s world junior boxing championships in Ukraine next week.
Chris Large has been named as assistant of the Australian team to help the manager and coaches.
Large will join fellow local and Australian junior male 80-kilogram champion Brock Shelley on the plane to Kiev.
The veteran of more than 260 fights, Large brings plenty of experience into the role.
He got the call earlier this month and said he can’t wait to go over to the Ukrainian capital.
“It is sort of a different feeling being on the other side of it,” Large said.
“As a boxer, I went to World Cups and you looked after yourself. You didn’t really worry about the coaches, you just wanted to get in there.
“It’s not until I’ve done a bit of coaching that you realise.
“I’m just trying to make the kids have fun and tell them to enjoy the experience because it is over in a blink of an eye.”
Mark Wilson is the head coach of the Australian junior team and Large said he would be learning a lot from him.
“Mark has been to World Cups and Olympic Games. Whatever I can learn from him would be great,” Large said.
“He has been around since I was fighting.”
The world championships were to be held from August 17 to 26 but were pushed back a fortnight.
They will be contested from September 5 to 15.
Australia are taking 13 fighters over to Europe for the championships including Kostya Tszyu’s son Nikita.
But only seven received funding assistance from Boxing Australia.
Shelley unfortunately had to raise his own funds, which he successfully did through a charity night at the Oriental Hotel and the fight night at Kandos’ Community Hall in June.
Large and Shelley will travel to Canberra on August 30 for final preparations before flying to the Ukraine on September 3.
“It just more about getting them together. They should all be fit and ready,” Large said.
