The Ulan underground tours are already booked out but that doesn’t mean other guests won’t have fun as a massive range of activities have been organised on site.
From 10am guests can take a range of tours, including open cut operations and environment and heritage tours. There will also be equipment displays, transport around site, suppliers to come and give demonstrations, radio broadcasting and catering.
There will also information about how Ulan Coal keeps its workforce fit and healthy, their involvement with community projects and initiatives and career information.
The Community Day is expected to showcase “industry leading” equipment and technology as well as provide an insight about Ulan Coal’s operations dating back to the 1920s.
This will be the first Community Day including the Ulan West underground mine after Ulan Surface Operations last held open days in 2012 and 2007.
GlencoreXstrata’s general manager of western operations, Dan Clifford, said members of the local community will have the chance to view almost every aspect to the Ulan complex.
“The day provides an opportunity for the community and families of employees to understand mining processes at Ulan and to get a first-hand view of where their parent, spouse, friend or relative works,” he said.
“It will also show there are many facets to mining including several environmental initiatives and heritage considerations.”
Mr Clifford said the Community Day had been in planning for months as it needed much preparation and logistical organisation.
The general manager said there would be lots of fun activities for all ages including a jumping castle, goodies and giveaways as well as a barbecue.
