The popularity of cider is growing dramatically in Australia, with cider sales more than quadrupling over the last four years, but as far as the producers know, The Goose apple cider is Mudgee’s first foray into the beverage.
The cider has been masterminded by student winemaker Will Gilbert, who said he was inspired by “working in pubs in Sydney and seeing the beginning of the cider boom.”
Mr Gilbert is one of a trio of young winemakers working with his father Simon Gilbert under the Gilbert by Simon Gilbert label.
The cider is currently available exclusively at Roth’s Wine Bar.
He saw the cider as a way of interesting cider and beer lovers in the label, perhaps leading them on to try its wines.
The cider has been dubbed The Goose in celebration of its playful, naughty nature, is made in a traditional dry style with cider apples grown organically on a vineyard in Orange, using only free-run apple juice crushed in a wine press, rather than concentrate.
A new cider will be produced each year, and the inaugural 2011 vintage reflects the Gilbert family’s clean, fresh winemaking style and the cool climate qualities of the fruit.
The cider is currently available exclusively at Roth’s Wine Bar, where it will be showcased at the Love Cider event from 6pm to 8pm on May 11.
A whole goose prepared by Rebecca Sutton of Olive.a.Twist will be served up in a variety of forms on the night and wines from Gilbert by Simon Gilbert will also be served.
Tickets are $45 per person and available at Roth’s Wine Bar.
