A live hand grenade was unearthed on a construction site in the Mudgee West End on Friday.
The grenade was found while digging on the site of the new Ready Mix Concrete depot at the corner of Bell and Market Streets.
The grenade was kept in safe custody by the Mudgee Police until Captain Siegloff of the Army Ordinance, near Lithgow came to Mudgee and defused the grenade.
Mudgee Police said the hand grenade was old and in a dangerous condition.
Grant of $18,000 for Mudgee streets
Mudgee Municipal Council has received its annual CAR grant for the year 1973/74, which amounts to $18,400, said the Mayor of Mudgee, Ald E G Moufarrige.
He said that the annual allocation of CAR grants is based upon a fixed formula which involves lengths of road, areas of councils, population and other details.
“The CAR grants will be used for the reconstruction and bitumen sealing of roads which are agreed upon between the council and the Department of Public Works,” Ald Moufarrige said.
“At the present time Mudgee Council is completing the reconstruction and bitumen sealing of Lewis Street.
“The next two streets to receive attention from CAR funds will be Spring Road in Mudgee South and Cox Street in Mudgee West.”
