A clinical performance by the Mudgee Wombats colts saw them mark the club’s first win in a return to the Blowes Clothing Cup competition.
After a relatively narrow loss to Forbes in round one, the talented Mudgee unit were on song at Jubilee Oval, keeping Cowra scoreless in a 41-0 thrashing.
Showing great team cohesion the Wombats dominated all areas but the win is likely to be judged by performances against stronger teams after Easter.
Mudgee colts co-coach Tim Burgess said the main thing was an improvement in the performance of his squad.
“I think the boys are all very happy they’ve won something. Last week we started not so well but this week we picked it up so we’re happy,” he said.
Co-coach Tom Flynn said there are a core group of leading players the side can base themselves around.
“Cowra weren’t as strong as we expected but again there were some Mudgee players who really stepped up again. Guys like Jonah [Poppe], Angus [Dunn], and Hank [Theunissen],” Flynn said.
“They did what we asked and didn’t slack off either for the whole game. We were impressed.”
What lies ahead is the big question.
“The whole competition you are not going to know what to expect. You hear a lot about the first grade teams but no so much their colts sides. We knew Cowra would probably struggle with numbers coming over here for the big trip,” Flynn said.
“Apparently they have a few injuries with their younger blokes but they’ll be better over there. It probably wasn’t a benchmark game but the guys played what was in front of them.”
Burgess said it now comes down to using their experiences and learning from the first two rounds.
“It’s a good thing for the boys that they’re playing footy now. They’ve taken a few knocks and now they have the win. A few of the boys are playing Central West which helps too,” Burgess said.
