Market Street was Mudgee’s original shopping strip, and gains its name from its status as a place for buying, selling and business.
The section of the street west of the bend was known in the 1800s as Market Lane, and was a bustling commercial hub servicing the busy goldfields.
The area around Market Lane housed shops including bakeries, butcher shops, general stores and several hotels, and industrial activity including a soap factory, a foundry, a flour mill, a cordial factory, a coach factory and a number of blacksmiths and wheelwrights.
In 1890 a four-acre public reserve on Market Street was dedicated as Market Square, which later became Robertson Park.
