If you told a Mudgee Dragons’ fan in August last year their side would be on top of the table after two weeks of the 2014 Group 10 season, they would have channelled Darryl Kerrigan and told you “you were dreamin’.”
But after two rounds, Mudgee lead a four-way battle at the top of the table.
Although it’s only the start of the marathon that is the Group 10 season, Dragons’ player-coach Jack Afamasaga couldn’t be happier.
“I’ve seen their highlights on the Western Rams website and they have good forwards and backs.”
“Everything that has happened has been a good surprise,” the former NRL hitman said.
“I think it has got to do with all the hard training and the commitment. It is a different atmosphere, there is a mateship attitude.
“It gives us a lot of confidence.”
A year ago, Mudgee had their worst start to a Group 10 season when they dropped their opening five matches.
They came home strongly but missed out on the finals for the first time in 15 years.
This year, it is a different story.
Wins over Blayney and Lithgow has given the Dragons confidence and if they can get the victory over the Tigers in Oberon on Sunday, it would further boost their belief.
“Our main goal is to get the two points,” Afamasaga said.
“It [a win] will give us a good run for the next two weeks as we are at home.”
But upstaging the Tigers, a team that has been a thorn in Mudgee’s side for the past two seasons, won’t be easy.
Mudgee have only beaten Oberon once since the Tigers returned to premier league in 2012.
The Tigers were the ones to eliminate Mudgee from the title race in 2012 and last year, a 22-all draw in round 14 spelt the end of Mudgee’s semi-final aspirations.
Afamasaga is aware of what the Tigers can do.
They also are two from two with one-point wins over Bathurst Panthers and last year’s grand finalists Orange Hawks.
“They have been dishing it out the last few weeks,” he said.
“I’ve seen their highlights on the Western Rams website and they have good forwards and backs.”
Mudgee co-captain Jeremy Lang is in doubt because of injury as are a few others.
Afamasaga said has a few options up his sleeve if those doubtful players aren’t able to play.
Mudgee’s women’s league tag and first division teams will be in action, while the under 18s have the bye.
