- "Ice Ice Baby" was initially released as the B-side to Vanilla Ice's cover of "Play That Funky Music", but the single was not initially successful. When a disc jockey played "Ice Ice Baby" instead, it began to gain success. "Ice Ice Baby" was the first hip hop single to top the Billboard charts. Topping the Australian, Dutch, Irish, Italian and UK charts.

- Ghost is released, an American romantic fantasy / crime thriller film starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Tony Goldwyn, and Whoopi Goldberg.
The film was an outstanding commercial success, grossing over $505.7 million at the box office on a budget of $22 million. It was the highest-grossing film of 1990. Adjusted for inflation, as of 2013 Ghost was the 91st-highest-grossing film of all time.

- Nintendo releases Super Mario World and F-Zero in Japan as launch titles for the Super Famicom (released for the SNES in North America and Australia). Super Mario World introduced the future Mario Kart favourite of many, Yoshi.
TV
- Australian children's TV series Johnson and Friends debuts on ABC.
