In a major upset, Country Physio, whose visits to the winner’s circle have been few and far between, downed Leven’s Smash Repairs 67-58.
Country Physio set the court alight in the first quarter, rarely missing as they stunned Leven’s 21-12, then without taking a breath, strode through the second period 22-13 for a half-time lead of 43-25.
With a huge job just to get back in the game, let alone win, Leven’s hit back strongly in the third period to outscore their opponents 16-10, but were still eating dust 12 points behind.
Country Physio dropped a further three points to Leven’s in the final quarter but were never really in danger of defeat, the early onslaught ensuring they had a nine point buffer at full-time.
Jim Disher hit a game high 29 points for Country Physio and a welcome return to shooting form by Andrew Channon with 14 points.
Cobey Pitt’s 22 points, mainly in the second half, gave Leven’s a glimmer of hope, Adam Keightley scored 18 and Simon Leven 16.
Crystal Clear Rams, co-leaders in the competition with Paragon, were on the receiving end of a torrid work out from fourth-placed Adam Keightley Constructions in last week’s round of men’s basketball.
Rams won 40-21 but had to work a lot harder than the score line suggests.
The vastly improved Construction team were not overawed at any time during a physical contest, and were only down by eight points at the first break.
Crystal Clear did everything in their power to shake off the challenge in the next two periods, both of which were the lowest quarter scores so far in the competition.
AKC matched up everywhere on the court, inch by inch whittling down the lead to trail by three at half-time.
Neither team gained the upper hand during a evenly matched third period, defence so prominent that only five points were score by each side.
By the fourth quarter however, alarm bells were ringing for AKC with four players on four fouls, and if earlier trends continued it was inevitable they would not be on the court at full-time.
One after the other they had to sit down, and as each left the court, the chances of an AKC win dissipated, much to the relief of the Rams.
As the final quarter unfolded, and the likelihood of a monumental upset disappeared, Crystal Clear, now with extra numbers, took full toll of a porous defence to rack up 18 points and conceded five from their dwindling opponents.
Ben Edmunds kept Crystal Clear in the game with 24 points and Graeme Brown nine. David Poppe and Lehi Poppe scored six points each for Adam Keightley Constructions.
Mayso’s Golf Shop had their noses in front in each quarter to account for Federal Sixers 48-39.
The first half lead of 21-12 paved the way for their victory, and they continued to edge ahead 9-7 in the third quarter, and 13-12 in the last to secure a comfortable victory by nine points.
Pete Mayson hit 12 points and Dave Jessiman 10 for the winners, while Jared Robinson 12 and Curtis Solomon five for Federal Sixers.
Paragon put paid to the challenge from Hairy Globetrotters without raising a sweat 86-36.
Paragon scored more than 20 points in each quarter with Chris Spinner leading the way with a total of 36 points and Chris Saliba 14.
Alex Barnes notched up 13 points and Craig Anderson eight for Hairy Globetrotters.
