To put it lightly, local concreter John Howden is peeved.
For months he and his team have been laying concrete along the community footpath and cycleway connecting Lawson Park and Glen Willow Regional Sporting Complex.
In that time Mr Howden has come across several incidences of vandalism along the path. People have inscribed their names or obscene language, as well as drawing pictures or dragging their feet through wet concrete.
These types of incidents are not uncommon with laying concrete but it has come to a point where Mr Howden has had enough.
In the past week several slabs have been destroyed as the path continues its construction west.
“I am finally getting sick of it,” Mr Howden said on Thursday.
“It has come to a point where it’s going to start costing me money.
“I am going to have to replace sections of the path because, for me, having it damaged is not what I was employed to do nor is it what the community expects. My name is attached to this work, I put pride in it and I want to do it properly.”
Mid-Western Regional Council has in the past helped replace some of the slabs but it has come to a point where damage is becoming too common.
“I don’t know what more I can do,” Mr Howden said.
“I’ve told police, I’ve told Council, and I am not going to watch concrete dry 24 hours a day.
“Maybe I could fence it off but vandals will still find a way in.”
Mr Howden encouraged members of the community to notify the police if they saw suspicious activity in the area.
