The Mudgee ladies made it to September’s final this week after a narrow 3-2 win over Cobar. Mudgee must now play West Wyalong next month in a bid to be crowned Western Pennants champions.
The semi-final win against Cobar was played at Narromine Golf Club and Mudgee Ladies president Trish Jones said it became a “close tussle with all players evenly matched, and few shots given or conceded.”
Mudgee jumped away to an early lead when number one player Jones won on the 18th hole, and number two player Kathy Underwood easily dispensed her opponent 4-3.
Cobar fought back to win the next two rubbers but Sharon Hughes and Carol Cockerill-Wright put up sound performances to narrowly lose their matches.
It came down to the wire with the result hinging on Mudgee’s number five player Shelly Best, who was competing in her first pennant match for Mudgee, and only the second time on sand greens. Best won her match in a strong performance 5-3.
Jones said along the way to qualifying for the final the ladies defeated Duntryleague in the home and away round one.
Their opponents in the quarter-final were Cowra, and the golf was played in extremely cold conditions at Orange Ex-services. Mudgee went on to win comfortably four rubbers to one.
Mudgee – winners of Western’s northern division - will now play southern winners West Wyalong in the Pennants final in September.
Jones said it had been some years since Mudgee reached this stage of the regional competition, and even longer since they won the coveted Pennant.
