Mid-Western Regional Council is expected to hand over clubhouse keys to both the Mudgee-Gulgong Wolves Football Club and Mudgee Touch Association this morning in time for the end of winter activities.
Yesterday Council general manager Brad Cam gave the building one final inspection before it was passed for usage this weekend. The amenities block will receive its first test tomorrow when the Wolves host their regular season junior football matches before a gala day on Sunday.
Mr Cam said he was pleased the clubhouse is back in action and being used by local sporting clubs.
“I know our touch football and soccer teams have been missing it and will be very glad to have use of the new canteen, barbeque, change rooms and bathrooms,” he said.
“It’s a key amenities building of the Glen Willow facility and makes the venue even better equipped to host major events like the upcoming A-League trial game and other one-off opportunities.
“The rebuilding of the clubhouse has given us the opportunity to change some things so that it will continue to be a valuable resource for the community.”
The ability to make alterations to the building throughout its restoration has also been welcomed by Mudgee Sports Council president, Peter Mitchell.
“Council have been fantastic to us,” he said yesterday.
“There were things both soccer and touch wanted changed to the building and Council has been receptive to both parties. We’ve negotiated something we’re all happy with.
“It’s unfortunate the facility could not be open a week or two earlier for the touch carnival that was here but the community will definitely welcome the clubhouse back.”
As with any new building there will need to be some minor additions or adjustments but on the whole it has been backed for use this weekend.
On the morning of July 1, 2013, the complex was being used by participants at the Football NSW under-14s state titles when a fire started in the roof of the away change rooms. An extractor fan in one of the change rooms was later found to be faulty.
