During her 11 years as cook at the Mudgee Golf Club, Mrs Nolan provided meals for many prominent people.
But the day Mr Whitlam came to lunch stands out as a red letter day.
In Mudgee to open the Mudgee Show, Mr Whitlam, his wife Margaret and a host of local dignitaries enjoyed a smorgasbord lunch prepared by Mrs Nolan at the Mudgee Golf Club.
Now 85 years old, Mrs Nolan still clearly recalls her meeting with Mr Whitlam.
“When he was finished his lunch, he came into the kitchen and shook my hand and thanked me for a lovely meal,” Mrs Nolan said.
Mrs Nolan, who describes herself as “a very strong Labor person”, said it was a very special day for her.
“I didn’t expect the Prime Minister to walk into the Golf Club kitchen,” she said.
“He was a very kind person,” she said.
“When he passed away, I felt like I had known him. ”
