Mudgee Shorts is a collaboration between Orana Arts, Mid-Western Regional Council, and performers from the region’s theatre groups, bringing local stories to the local stage.
The project began around six months ago with scriptwriting workshops, followed by casting, rehearsal, and the final preparations for the curtain to rise on a smorgasbord of home-grown theatre.
The 12 plays range from wild comedies to serious meditations, with local writers taking on matters of life and death, and both first-time and experienced actors testing themselves with some challenging material.
Prizes will be presented on closing night for Best Script, Best Production, Best Actor and Best Actress, as selected by a panel of expert judges.
Subjects range from science fiction themes of cloning and time travel, to father and son relationships and stories of loss and ambition.
Gulgong’s MADS theatre group will be represented by a section from Michaeley O’Brien’s recent Phoenix Rising production, while the Twin Town Players will bring a story about ageing from Rylstone and Kandos.
The program even includes two musicals, Elise Eloise by Andrea Sauerbier and Jill Baggett, and The Cup of Human Kindness by David McLennan. The night will also feature the winning production from Short Shorts, the show’s youth section being staged on Thursday, October 30.
Primary school and high school students from every school in Mudgee have been working towards the Thursday show for some months, and like their adult counterparts, they have taken on both amusing and serious subjects with energy and enthusiasm.
Mudgee Shorts will be staged at the Town Hall Theatre at 7.30pm on Friday, October 31, and 2.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday, November 1.
Short Shorts, the youth version of the production, will be staged at 7.30pm on Thursday, October 30, at the Town Hall Theatre.
Tickets for any session are $15 for adults, $10 concession and $40 for a family. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.trybooking.com/GDJS
